Last week, from 10th to 14th October, the 50th jubilee year of Mining Příbram Symposium in science and technology was held. The main partner of the event organized by DIAMO and Employers Association of the Mining and Oil Industry was the company OKD.
The conference was divided into six sections, with presentations and subsequent discussions on innovations in the technological processes in mining, application of mathematical methods in geology and mining, application of the results and conclusions from scientific and research projects in the mining or smoothing effects of mining activities in the Czech Republic. Especially restoration of land historically touched by mining activities was mentioned during the conference as a part of miner´s responsible approach to the region. This conclusion also resonates with reclaiming activities of OKD, which made the landscape in Ostrava and Karvina looks better during last years and also helped in creation of rest areas for Karviná citizens (Dinopark, Darkov sea) and naturally valuable sites in terms of rare plants and animals.
As in the past, folk songs sounded and parade passed the historical part of Příbram. Graduates of the local high school were admitted to the Mining and Steel Guild after ceremonial Jump over the skin in a local gym, right after completion of all required tests, which proved their competence (drinking beer at a time, crossbow shooting, passing to the brim full of pots filled with fluid of unknown origin).
The part of event was, as in previous years, an excursion to the area of former ore and uranium mines Anna and Vojtěch in Příbram. Marek Síbrt
