OKD was a partner of the 6th technical conference called „Expected development in the Energy Sector and Energy Prices“, which was held last Wednesday at the Congress Centre in Brno. Representatives of important energy utilities and mining companies (e.g. ČEZ, RWE, Czech Coal), energy market analysts and civil servants from ministries participated in this event.
OKD was represented by Ján Fabián, the Director for Strategic Development, who delivered a presentation titled „Hard Coal – a stable source of energy in unstable times“. In his presentation he emphasised the importance of hard coal as a stable, economical and environment-friendly source of energy and he introduced projects assuring the prosperity of OKD in the future such as POP 2010, Safety 2010 and PERSPektiva 2015. At the same time he mentioned the position of the company as an important producer of energy coal in the central European region, which is sold not only in the Czech Republic but also exported to Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.
„Hard coal as a strategic fuel has an irreplaceable role in world energy in these unstable times. The natural disaster at Fukushima restarted the extensive debate on the future prospects of nuclear power. The current political events in the Arabic countries or the past disputes between Russia and Ukraine show the risks of oil and gas supplies as strategic fuels. More intensive use of renewables at the current state of the technology is not efficient and is economically unsustainable. The coal deposits are fairly distributed all over the world and not concentrated only in unstable regions,“ explained Fabián.
When he presented the objectives and results of POP 2010 he also pointed out that, in addition to the increase in productivity, the project also had a positive impact on general safety in the mines and the LTIFR indicator at OKD mines went down by 56 per cent between 2007 and last year.
