OKD company offered four period miner's lanterns to the organisers of the 10th European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 (EYOWF) held from 12 to 19 February in the Liberec region. The lanterns served nothing else than Olympic flame! “The organisers themselves got in touch with us and asked us to provide lanterns for transporting and carrying the Olympic flame. They had the flame sent directly from Athens in Greece in a special lantern designed for air transportation that was similar to our miner's lanterns,“ stated Martin Határ from OKD Public Relations and Communication Unit.
The symbolic flame delivered by the delegation was handed over to Stanislav Eichler, the governor of Liberec region. He kept one of the lanterns in his office, while the remaining three were given to the representatives of the three organising municipalities – Jan Korytář (the mayor of Liberec), Petr Beitl (mayor of Jablonec nad Nisou) and Luboš Marek (mayor of Kořenov).
Thus the Olympic flame in miner's lanterns from Ostrava region blazed for the greatest young sportsmen from all over Europe, who in Liberec region fought for medals in eight disciplines, namely Snowboarding, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Biathlon and Alpine Skiing.
In the world of sports, EYOWF is considered to be “mini Olympics of future great stars”. Its tradition established by Jacques Rogge, the current President of the International Olympic Committee, dates back to early 1990s. Dozens of 15 to 18 years old sportsmen took part in this year's festival held in the Liberec region.
