OSTRAVA – OKD as one of the European mining leaders. OKD as the largest employer in the Region and one of the most important employers in the Czech Republic. OKD as the enterprise where people are the priority. OKD as the company which supports not only “its” Region, but also a lot of creditable health care, social and leisure time projects. These were the major items of the presentation of Petra Mašínová, Chief PR and Communication Officer at the “Marks in Region” conference.
This fifth year of this event organized by the Moravian-Silesian Region and Regional Development Agency Ostrava was focused on companies with corporate social responsibility. “It was focused on the companies which are not indifferent to how and where they run their business,” specified Pavla Břusková, Director, Regional Development Agency Ostrava, adding that OKD acted there not only as a partner. Last year, the mining company came within an ace of winning the first prize of the Region Governor for the best “socially responsible” company.
“I am glad that I could present what we have achieved in OKD over the last years,” said Mašínová. She did not forget to mention the POP 2010 Programme, which is particularly unique through its financial volumes in the Czech Republic. She also mentioned safety with new personal protective equipment. “Miners used to go down the mines in rubber boots probably one hundred years. And the rubber boots are now being replaced by modern working shoes,” she said. She also informed the conference participants on land reclamation and another remediation of mining effects.
“We have one of the largest corporate foundations in the country. Every year, OKD donates it one percent of its profit. NWR and its subsidiary companies also rank among the donors. It has resulted in supports to over six hundred projects among which the OKD Foundation has distributed almost CZK 100 million,” announced Mašínová. According to her, an example of the OKD Foundation flexibility and operability is also the fact that the OKD Foundation quickly responded to and provided its help during the recent flooding.
“Care for employees, investments in human resources, socially beneficial activities, focus on both the quality and environment are the values whose return will positively influence business conducted by any company,” said Brušková, Regional Development Agency Ostrava. Marian Lebiedzik, Deputy of Region Governor pointed out that the corporate social responsibility is “a method of how to conduct business successfully and at the same time, correctly” and it also includes supports for civilian life.
