Unusual program was waiting for Paul Moore, reporter of the prestigious monthly magazine International Mining during a visit to the Ostrava-Karviná coalmine area. On Friday, September 2nd, he attended the Benefit Concert of OKD Foundation, which earnings were transferred to St. Barbara Civic Association which supports families of miners who died in mine as a result of accident. He visited OKD Mining Festival in Saturday. There has been something, what Karviná never seen before: an exhibition of modern mining technology and the OKD Foundation Carnival parade.
"I have experienced something like that for the first time in my life. Despite the language barrier, I understood that links between OKD and people in the region is very intense. Miners are the part of daily life of Karviná citizens. It's very good that the company realizes that it is not always just about productivity and economic indicators, but also about giving joy and responsibility to the community in this region," Moore described his experiences.
Modern technology was good choice
On Monday, Bohuslav Hatina, the senior editor of Czech monthly magazine “Coal, ores, geological survey” joined Moore and both of them visited underground. They were in 111 471 road heading face of forman Peter Uhrin, where they have seen road heading complex Sandvik MR340 in action. The main goal of Moore's visit to the region had been preparing a profile article on OKD company. "Last time I visited several mines in Poland. So I can compare. In case of OKD, I know that the company decided to purchase the most modern mining technology, that would make higher productivity and efficiency of work, in compare with some of the mines in Poland, allow to be in profit, to mine in difficult geological conditions, to have a better access to more reserves and to give the work to many thousands of people in the region," Moore compared.
Safety First
At the end of the visit, a British journalist met with the CEO, OKD K.-D. Beck, who spoke in an interview on what has changed in recent years in OKD especially in connection with the POP 2010 investment program and what are the prospects for companies in the future in further increasing efficiency and improving logistics. Beck emphasized safety, as a highest priority in the area of employee efforts, and highlighted the steps that have been implemented in this area with the consequent results.
