OSTRAVA – Iron, iron and again iron - this is probably the most frequently used material in our hard coal underground mines. We meet with iron at every turn on the surface premises and underground. Shaft head frames, ropes, rails, locomotives, piping, supports, cutter loaders, conveyors, structures ... It is therefore quite logical that it is necessary to rationally manage such a precious, renewable material, including any discarded idle iron material designed for scrapping.
If an activity is being done systematically, in a centralized manner, then such an activity usually brings the required effect. With respect to this issue, a breaking point occurred two years ago, precisely on January 1, 2008. On that date at the site of Dukla Mine, which was being liquidated, OKD established the Metal Waste Management operation, which was organizationally included under the BU Procurement. At present, the Metal Waste Management is included in the OKD, BU Service Centre Organization Chart. It aims to be a centralized section of OKD for depositing and processing metal waste from the individual BUs of OKD.
Scrap from Dukla
In 2008, the Metal Waste Management operation particularly provided for the processing and recycling of metal waste from the liquidated Dukla Mine. In the period between January 1 and September 30, 2008, the Metal Waste Management operation processed and dispatched 27,888 tons of metal scrap, which would fill 930 rail wagons.
After the Dukla Mine liquidation was completed, the Metal Waste Management operation was closed down at the Dukla Mine site as of September 30, 2008 and was moved to the Lazy Mining Plant site, Karviná Mine.
Rail Siding is an advantage
“The new working site, which started its operation on September 13, 2008, is provided with its own rail siding, large paved area of 2,400 m² to store metal waste, and road and rail weighing machines,” Libor Poloch, Technical Deputy Director, Service Centre described the current situation. “The site also includes a hall designed particularly for operating the metal scrap weighing machines and non-ferrous metal storage and sorting. The whole Metal Waste Management site is fenced and guarded by the security team using a camera monitoring system.” The metal waste is transported by OKD, Doprava on a contractual basis.
Centralization has paid
“The two-year operation and results of the Metal Waste Management operation have proved that the idea of its establishment was correct. The working site completes its tasks reliably, which may also be documented by the fact that for the period of its existence, it has processed and dispatched 57,000 tons of metal waste,” Deputy Director Poloch said in conclusion.
