The Frenštát Mine

frenstat.jpgThe reserve of the Frenštát Mine consists of two deposits: Frenštát-west and Frenštát-east. The Frenštát Mine is in preservation mode.

The area of the Frenštát Mine extends over 63 km2. Together with the neighbouring surveying area of Čeladná-Krásná it is the only significant coal deposit with mineable seams of the Karviná strata layers outside the Karviná region. There are five seams suitable for mining. In addition, there is also the Ostrava strata layer.

The Frenštát Mine

  • overall geological reserves: about 1,6 bil. tons
  • coal reserves and resources: 78 mil. tons
These figures apply as of 1 July 2007 according to JORC standards (Joint Ore Reserves Committee).

History

Prospect holes from the surface realized towards the end of the 60’s and at the beginning of the 70’s of the previous century showed evidence of the extensive presence of the Karviná strata layer in the Frenštát area. On this basis it was decided to continue the survey by excavating mine workings in definitive profiles.

In the middle of 1982 the sinking of the shaft no. 4 of the designed plant of Frenštát-west was commenced, however, it was damaged during the works. Therefore the support waswere reinforced. The final depth of the shaft no. 4 is 943 metres.

In March of 1983 the sinking of the shaft no. 5 was commenced at the same site. It was completed without problems, reaching the depth of 1088 metres. Both shafts were interconnected at the level of –590 meters.

The first coal was taken out of the shaft no. 5 on April 12, 1988. It came from the depth of 885 meters.

In 1991 it was decided to put the Frenštát Mine into preservation mode.
