Overview of results
Handball emerged in Karviná more than fifty years ago in the form of the boys’ club in the apprentice school of the May 1st Mine. Shortly thereafter the Baník Karviná team gradually fought their way from the regional championship to the highest league and in 1968 won the first champion’s title. Since then the handball players of Baník have belonged to the top teams of the Czechoslovakian league and since 1993 in the Czech Republic. They won the league eight times (1968, 1972, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006), the Czech Cup three times, the Czech-Slovak extra-league twice (2001, 2002). They participated in European competitions – the Cup of European Champions, Cup Winners’ Cup, IHF, City Cup, and in 2000-2006 they played the most prestigious handball club competition – the Champions’ League. The basis for the top results at the Czech as well as the international level is traditionally a long-time and successful work with the youth, supported systematically by the town of Karviná.
