Tomáš Hanzel, Mayor of Karviná, and Klaus Dieter Beck, OKD CEO, have signed an agreement protecting Karviná for the next 10 years from undesired impacts of mining activities and preserve thousands of jobs. The agreement with OKD will also ensure an unprecedented financial support to Karviná.
“According to my opinion, these are the best conditions that the Town had ever been able to negotiate with the mining company. On one hand, we stipulate the impassability of the right bank of the Olza River thus protecting Karviná’s residential areas against further coal mining; on the other hand, we were and we are successful in gaining OKD’s financial support. Funds are provided on a regular basis (ca 70 million per year) not only to the municipal budget but, in these difficult economic times, OKD supports also handball, soccer and other teams acting on the territory of the town. OKD Foundation provides major benefits to local NGOs too. We have also performed a successful swap of the Družba community house for lands with OKD and we are repairing the cultural center using EU funds; among others, we are using OKD funds to repair municipal roads and greenery or as a basis for cultural subsidies. In my opinion, this agreement means stable business for OKD and preservation of more than 20 thousand jobs for the region,” says Tomáš Hanzel, Mayor, adding that he considers the relationship between OKD and the town to be at the best level in its history. “I have to emphasize that OKD finally pays back what coal mining took from us earlier, and this is clearly to be credited to the new management of the company,” said Hanzel.
“I am glad that Karviná municipal board members and representatives appreciate the significance of OKD for the region. And we know how important the correct cooperation with the townhall is for the future of our company. It is our target to provide responsible prospective business offering jobs to people and thanks to reclamation projects, providing more to nature than what is taken away. It is obvious that we support the region via OKD Foundation,” said Klaus-Dieter Beck, OKD CEO and Chairman of the Board.
Karviná municipal board has approved the wording of the agreement in May; it was signed by leading representatives of both parties at the Fryštát Castle.
