KARVINÁ “Why do only our hewers and drifters support the children from Barborka? Why don’t we, electricians, support the orphaned children of miners as well?” Some time ago, the idea flashed through the head of electrician Lubomír Březný, ČSA plant of the Karviná Mine, as he was looking at a bulletin board with information on donations of miners to the Foundation of St. Barbora.
The electricians agreed that one did not know how most charities spent the donated money. “There are simply too many of them and one does not know much about what they do. On the other hand, there is an article on the miners’ charity, St. Barbora, in the “Horník (Miner)” paper almost every week, and we thus know the donations are made use of meaningfully, for the benefit of the children of our colleagues who perished underground. This is why I opted for Barborka and offered our guys a chance to join me,” says Březný, recalling the beginnings of the CZK 10,000 donation from the 200-strong team of electricians of ČSA plant of the Karviná Mine.
They agreed to contribute CZK 50 each and no one refused. Representatives of all working gangs handed the donation over to Hana Gumpingerová, Secretary of the Foundation. She and the Foundation’s Chairman, Vladislav Sobol, then informed the donors about new arrangements thanks to which orphaned families supported by Barborka will have a faster and easier access to funds in support of their children’s education.
In the end, a new idea born in the pleasant atmosphere of the meeting. “What about giving a donation every year and making it a tradition?” For a while, there was silence, the guys looked at each other and without giving the idea much further thought, they agreed: :Why not?”
