OSTRAVA – The children must not feel any crisis, and this principle applies even more to those from “Barborka” (i.e. St. Barbara Civil Association). Therefore, the St. Barbara Civil Association prepares, together with the Mother’s Committee, shared events and new contributions to particularly help the neediest people. Apart from the traditional supports for education, the St. Barbara Civil Association wants to help mothers with covering the increasing health care costs.... more

(Ostrava, October 22) – Projects of non-profit organisations that were of benefit to their environment, as well as people who help to improve the lives of others, deserve both financial rewards in the form of grants, but also public acknowledgement and esteem. KARVINÁ – The designation of the recultivation project called 'Křemenec area recultivation' derives from the name of the area locally known as 'Na Křemenci' (The Quartzite Site) at the boundary separating the communities of Karviná-Doly, Doubrava and Orlová. Within the area to the northwards of the state highway I/59 Ostrava – Karviná, adjoining the premises of what used to be the Doubrava Mine, there is a subsidence valley where a system of sludge ponds was built during the 1980s to serve as a wastewater treatment station for all the wastewaters coming from the Doubrava mining site.... more
ORLOVÁ – What do you think of when you hear the word “Figura”? Skiers may presumably think of a ski resort Figura under the Praděd Mountain, or rather the name of the owner of the property. However, a site of the same name also lies in Orlová, near road No. I/59 that connects Ostrava and Karviná. In the past there used to be a romantic park with a lake and an island dominated by a majestic water sprite right in its centre, or rather a stone sculpture of a water sprite. The lake, established at a tributary of the Doubravský Stream, attracted people living nearby to take a stroll and relax there. But alas!... more
KARVINÁ – When you are going by road from Orlová to Karviná, you cannot miss an interesting site on the right hand side – a considerably leaning structure. People smilingly compare it to the leaning tower in the Italian town of Pisa. It is the Church of St. Peter of Alcantara built in 1736 in the Baroque style. It leans visibly by 6.8° to the South from the vertical axis and stands in the centre of the original town of Karviná, today Doly.... more

ORLOVÁ – The mining colonies of Liberdova and Červená between Orlová and Karviná-Mines presently exist only in eyewitnesses’ minds. Due to the mining performed in the near mines, there was subsidence there, and the local houses were collapsing and in the end, they were pulled down. The water stream of Lazecká Stružka, which used to flow through the colonies, overflew. But even before the flooding, the miners launched a rescue.... more
