KARVINÁ – Thirty-two classrooms, two laboratories for theoretical lessons, and eight specialist classrooms, and furthermore, one laboratory, twenty-one workshops and welder’s school for practical training are provided by a large school campus of the Secondary School of Technology and Services in Karviná, which will also offer mining branches from the next school year. STONAVA – The last refuse dump, located in the area of Stonava municipality, the ugly heritage of the former “9. květen” Mine (“9 May Mine”), is slowly disappearing. Daily, there are eight mammoth trucks of OKD, Doprava in service there to remove the refuse dump material some 10 kilometres further to the site of the former František Mine at Horní Suchá, where it is used as backup material to remedy the old sludge ponds.... more
OSTRAVA - In the early 1990s, nobody would bet a single bean on the heavy industry in our Region. Nevertheless after its robust downsizing, it has revived again, becomes more robust and is prospective. In many directions, it is a wheeler of our economy. However, the innovation will not get along without experts, qualified labour force, science or research. And with respect to this issue, there is a stumbling block. There is a lack of educated people in the technical fields. Young people do not rush into the industry very much.... more
OSTRAVA – Since October, St. Barbara Civic Association.has a new executive secretary – Ms. Vlasta Rádlová, who did a meritorious job and took her leave for reasons of ill health, has been replaced by „young blood“ – Ms. Hanka Gumpingerová (see photo), who has turned twenty three but herself had lost her dad when she was fifteen, whereupon she was drawing on the Association's assistance. STONAVA – At first sign, no change can probably be seen. The building of the Polish elementary school in Stonava stands as it did in the past, and since last week, the children have been also learning their subjects there. During the holiday months, the school building underwent a consistent reconstruction, during which special reinforced concrete structures, designed to protect the building against soil movements, were installed underneath the floor of the annex building, constructed in the 1950s.... more
KARVINÁ (15.9.2008) – Mum, dad, I'm gonna become an apprentice miner! For OKD! Judging from the ninth-graders' interest in the apprenticeship offers in the professions of U/G mechanic or U/G electrician for mining operations as displayed at the „Choose your profession“ presentation event, this might be the kind of reactions that can be expected to be heard in family discussions in the Karviná district. Hundreds of pupils, but also of their teachers or instructors, made their stop at the stall of Secondary School of Technology and Services, which will be engaged in preparing new workers for the OKD mines.... more
HAVÍŘOV (11.9.2008) – The opening of Havířov Region's Mining Exhibition became a veritable cultural event. As many as three hundred visitors „rode down the mine“ to reach the exhibition gallery in the basement of the 'Radost' House of Culture and near the tables holding the exhibits one couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting something. People were flipping through old chronicles, examined with much interest various items which to miners would be commonplace, and dads and granddads were boasting to their offspring explaining the purposes of the various exhibits, themselves succumbing to the marvels of reminiscences.... more
OSTRAVA/BRIGHTON - Children of employees who suffered fatal injuries at work are taken care of by the St. Barbara Civic Association, until they complete their preparations for entering a job or profession – and it is precisely their education that the Association regards as first and foremost. This is why this year, the Association paid the costs of a four-week language course held in England, on behalf of four young ladies and one young man who previously had been receiving subsidies mainly toward their teaching aids or club activities.... more

This famous quote from the fourth and last play, As You Like It ..., brought to conclusion the 2008 Shakespearean Festival held at the castle of Silesian Ostrava. The parade of scenes from the plays by one of the greatest playwrights of all times appears to have been the Number One theatrical event of the year for the city as well as for the region.... more

The Board of Directors of OKD has adopted a Company code of ethics that is obligatory for all the employees of the firm. It defines basic values and attitudes to enterprise that OKD conforms to in the course of its business activities.
The code of ethics is not any binding rule of law or internal directive, it represents, however, a moral obligation for each employee of OKD.
