KARVINÁ – On Thursday, September 30 already before 9:00 a.m., Milan Kupka’s band welcomed the visitors to the Doors Open Day, organized on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Secondary School of Technologies and Services existence in Karviná.
The Doors Open Day was officially opened after ten o’clock, when Iva Sandriová, School Headmistress, together with Radim Tomášek, Chief Human Resources Officer of OKD, Lenka Marková, Deputy Director of OKD Foundation and Petr Juras, Deputy Lord Mayor of Karviná cut the ribbon to open the newly reconstructed hallway of the school. OKD also participated in the reconstruction, and its co-financing was provided by the OKD Foundation. At present, the key dominant of the school hallway is an exposition called “Small Tender Hajcman”, which was built by OKD personnel for the school. It is a stylized mine work area fragment symbolizing the close relation of the school to the mining, as well as the fact that just last year, the traditional fields of mining apprenticeship, i.e. mining fitter and mining electrician, were re-opened at the school.
“Our school was established as a mining apprentice centre and was preparing young people for work in OKD mines for 40 years,” the Headmistress remembered the fact that the school started its existence on September 1, 1950 as an apprentice centre designed for the education and training of young miners. The apprentice centre prepared apprentices in specific mining branches, such as drifter and miner. Afterwards, specialized fields of apprenticeship were gradually opened, e.g. mining fitter, electrician, mechanic or miner of mechanized work areas, and along with the change of the fields of study and apprenticeship, the school name was also changing. First off, it was the Apprentice Centre, then Apprentice Centre of Crafts, and afterwards, Integrated Secondary School. Since September 29, 2005, its exact name has been the Secondary School of Technologies and Services, Karviná, an allowance organization.
As stated by Iva Sandriová, at present the school also emphasizes its mining traditions, and at the same time, it also presents itself as a state-of-the-art educational facility, which offers 6 fields of study to be completed by obtaining the Secondary School Leaving Certificate, 11 fields of study to be completed by obtaining the Apprentice Centre Leaving Certificate and 2 follow-up fields of study.
The school anniversary celebration continued on Thursday, October 7 during a solemn academy event held in the Municipal House of Culture in Karviná.
