STAŘÍČ – In the first half of September the workers at the Staříč site of Paskov Mine can see a Škoda Fabia displayed in the reception hall of the mine which is the prize in the competition of miners and surface workers including contractors' employees. A person with neither reported nor recorded injury at work between April and December this year can win this car.
„The majority of our people meet this requirement,“ said David Kolář, the Industrial and Personal Safety Manager at Paskov Mine, adding that the site was chosen for the display of the main prize in the competition “Safety in First Place” thanks to its excellent results in this area. The company was awarded for two subsequent quarters (the first and the second) the challenge trophy in the form of an OKD pit lamp given for achievements in mining, footage and safety.
Paskov Mine had in total 47 reported and 31 recorded injuries from January till the end of August (last year it was 59 and 31 respectively). „Luckily we have had no fatal injury. The only bad mark is represented by five cases resulting in hospitalisation exceeding five days,“ added Kolář. The contractors have improved and they reported only two reported and four recorded injuries in the same period.
The most west situated pit in the district also maintains its Injury Frequency Rate below 10. The safety monitoring system in Paskov also includes regular inspections carried out by senior engineers down in the mine – every week they focus on a particular issue on each site. However, these inspections are not „raids“, the foremen are notified about them in advance.
„The check of the condition of walkways for miners is a never ending story. Injuries caused by tripping and slipping are not associated with mining only. However, they repeatedly happen and they can be avoided,“ added Kolář. Paskov Mine therefore installs steps at walkways with the inclination from 15° (even though the legal requirement is from 30°) and tries to control water on the floors as it also poses a risk of slips and falls.
