OSTRAVA – OKD succeeds in improving the occupational health and safety results. Last year, the number of registered injuries decreasedfrom 519 to 416, i.e. by 19.85 percent, and during the first half-year of 2009, 166 work injuries have only been registered in all the work areas of OKD. In comparison with the same period of 2008, when 210 work injuries were registered, it represents a decrease of 44 injuries, which represents a 21 percent improvement.
Last year in our mining company, the number of registered injuries decreased by 19.85 percent, and in the first half-year of 2009, that number has further decreased by additional 21 percent. |
At the same time in the monitored period, the Injury Incidence Rate decreased from 12.82 to 11.44 and the Injury Seriousness Coefficient decreased from 10.40 to 9.48. The number of spontaneous ignition cases also dropped from 5 to 3 and no methane ignition occurred. The introduction of new technologies under the Productivity Optimization Program, known as POP 2010, and also, the application of new personal protective equipment and detectors considerably participate in the achieved results.
These results represent an OKD success in spite of the sad fact that two persons died in hard coal mining this year. Let their tragedy be a motivation to continue pursuing the successful way towards the reduced accident incidence.
The OKD safety policy, formulated in the “OKD Safety Principles” at the beginning of the last year, has already entered personnel’s awareness and positively influences personnel’s behaviour. This is confirmed not only by the achieved results. This year, the OKD safety status was also reviewed by Stan Suboleski, a member of the Board of Directors of OKD, who was submitted, during three days, detailed information on the occupational health and safety management method and internal management acts relating to this area, and he also visited the ČSM Mine, a training mine adit in the Paskov Mine and the Mining Museum. Consequently, he produced an extensive Report on his findings, which are entirely positive.
Behind the achieved results, there are especially (i) a responsible approach of all employees, and (ii) implementation of new technologies within the POP 2010 Productivity Optimization Program. |
For the current occupational health and safety status, thanks belong, without any exception, to all employees of OKD, throughout all professions and job positions.

The Board of Directors of OKD has adopted a Company code of ethics that is obligatory for all the employees of the firm. It defines basic values and attitudes to enterprise that OKD conforms to in the course of its business activities.
The code of ethics is not any binding rule of law or internal directive, it represents, however, a moral obligation for each employee of OKD.
