Nature in Ostrava region

Valuable natural areas near the face working area
  • The Poodří protected landscape area (declared in 1991)
  • The Poodří marsh (declared in 1993)
  • The forest of Polany – natural reserve
  • The Heřmanice fishpond
  • The Skučát fishpond
  • National natural monument - the hill of Landek
In the Ostrava region you can visit for example natural reserves

  • Polanská niva (the flood plains of Polany) – through the river Odra meanders with rare plant communities
  • Polanský les (the forest of Polany) – an alluvial forest near the Odra river with significant dense forest and low level vegetation
  • Rezavka in Svinov – an alluvial forest and water habitats

An object of interest can be occasional boulders in urban areas – an evidence of glaciation of the Ostrava region. The largest glacial boulder in the Czech Republic can be found in Vratimovská street near Nová Huť, others can be found at Černá louka (Black meadow) or in Poruba.

You can visit the ZOO which has surrounding forests in the Silesian part of Ostrava, Bělský les (Bělský forest) which has jogging trails or the forests behind the Faculty of Mining and Geology which have a fitness trail, an outdoor swimming pool and a planetarium. The Heřmanice fishpond near Vrbice is an ornithological site. Also, a reservoir of salty mining waters can be found in this industrial environment.

Outer surroundings

Ostrava is also a logical centre for many interesting areas in terms of nature and tourism:

  • The Jeseníky mountains
  • The Beskydy mountains and Moravian Wallachia
  • The Silesia of Opava
  • The Silesia of Těšín
  • The Moravian Kravaře region
