The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) rejected the European Commission’s plan to close coal mines in order to reach climate change targets. Turning to heavy industries, the EESC rejected the Commission’s proposal to close down coal mines to reduce CO2 emissions, warning that such a move would have more negative repercussions in the future than benefits.... more

The European Commission has approved a proposal for a Council Regulation on State aid to facilitate the closure of loss-making hard coal mines in the EU by 1st October 2014. Any further operating aid to the sector will be conditional on the presentation of a closure plan for the loss-making mines. The Member States concerned will be able to assist with the counselling and training of the affected workers and ensuring that the mining sites are properly cleaned up and safe.... more

Overview of the agenda of the Energy Council
The Council is expected to reach political agreement on a regulation concerning the notification to the Commission of investment projects in energy infrastructure within the European Community (6502/10). Informal meeting of Ministers of Energy and Environment will be held from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 January. Work sessions with industry ministers and visit to the PS20 thermo-solar power station in Abengoa will take place during the meeting.
