Coal in the Czech Republic

Since 19th century miining, processing and utilization of coal in Bohemia and Moravia represents an important industry sector. In the 90’s of the 20th century reduction in mining of all local types of coal took place, these days, however, attention is paid to this power source again.

Coal reserves in the Czech Republic are estimated to be approximately 10 bill. tons,. The structure of stock as follows:

  • hard coal: 37 percent
  • brown coal: 60 percent
  • lignite coal: 3 percent

Annual production of coal in the Czech Republic is approximately 60 mill. t. Around 55 percent of electricity production is from steam power plants.
