An unfortunate accident occurred in Darkov Mine on Sunday

OSTRAVA (19 December 2010) – On Sunday a rock bump occurred in the Darkov Mine, which resulted in a fatal injury incurred by a 48-year-old miner. According to the doctor’s first information, another miner who was present in the affected area suffered a light injury and was transported to hospital to undergo a preventive check-up.

The tragic event occurred in the 9 May Mining Plant, which is a part of the Darkov Mine, approximately 800 metres underground.

“We all have been deeply affected by the news of the death of our colleague, especially at this pre-Christmas time,” said Klaus-Dieter Beck, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors, OKD. “We continue doing our best to ensure that the safety of our mining operations improves, however, it is not humanly possible to deal with some natural phenomena. In my own name, as well as on behalf of the whole company, I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the family and close friends of our deceased colleague,” added Beck.

The causes of this extraordinary event are being investigated by a commission comprising representatives of the Ostrava District Mining Office, Darkov Mine management and trade unions.
