Extraordinary event at Karviná Mine

OSTRAVA (14th November 2014) On Friday before noon, a rock burst occurred in the underground workings of Karviná Mine, in a consequence of which, three employees lost their lives.

A rock burst of the energy 8,58 x 106 J took place around 900 meters underground in the area of the cross-entry of the mining workings.

Immediately, HBZS mining and medical rescue squads were called in and intensive work was commenced with the goal to rescue injured employees. HBZS rescue squad described injuries not compatible with life.

„On my behalf and on behalf of all the employees, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the families and close relatives of deceased colleagues“ Kamil Kempný, the General Manager of Karviná Mine stated.

Causes of this extraordinary event are currently being investigated by an expert committee consisting of members of District Mining Authority in Ostrava, management of Karviná Mine, OKD company and the trade unions in cooperation with the Police of the Czech Republic.
