Lipiny Golf Resort Opens a Public Course; Even Beginners Can Play

Karviná (August 2, 2012) – The OKD mining company keeps its promise and, after the Master Course that is intended for experienced golfers, it also opens a Public Course on Friday, August 3, where total beginners can take their first steps in golf. The price of one game is 100 crowns on working days and 150 crowns over the weekend.
The nine-hole course features very decent parameters: the total length of 1555 metres includes six par-3 holes and four par-4 holes.“ The course is also available to golfers with minimum golf experience. All that is needed is to take a few lessons with a coach, to get acquainted with the rules and etiquette of golf and to hit a few balls at the driving range,“ explained the resort director, Libor Buchta.
The natural golf course was built on a site previously affected by mining which is situated between the Karviná and Darkov mines; there, the consequences of mining have still been visible until recently. The whole area has undergone extensive reclamation and subsequent ground remodelling into a golf course that was designed by a Bratislava company, ORAG Slovakia, whose references include e.g. the design of the world-famous course at Čeladná.
It is expected that the Public Course will also be used by experienced golfers, who will use it to improve the short game. For over three months, they could enjoy golf on a Master Course which is one of the longest in Europe with its 3567 meters.
“A golf course is one of the alternatives of the use of land affected by coal mining. We expect that after reclamation even some undermined areas will turn into other sports and recreational zones in the future. Due to reclamation projects of OKD, previously unused sites gradually begin to serve the residents,“ said Radim Tabášek, OKD Mining District Development.
At Lipiny, reclamation work began in 1998 and the land use has led to much debate. Under the original plan, a plot of arable land had to be the outcome of the reclamation; at a later stage, afforestation was mentioned. Finally, the municipal council opted for a terrain modelling solution intended for golf or motocross. The final decision to build a golf course was made in 2007. Lipiny is a prime example of cooperation between a mining company and a mining town; the golf course itself situated in a unique environment within eye shot of head frames was built by OKD. For its part, the City of Karviná plans to build new trails for in-line skaters and cyclists in the adjoining area that would connect Lipiny with the Darkovské moře complex. Thus, southwest of the city, there will be a vast area intended for recreation and leisure activities.
