OKD cares about the future of the employees leaving the company and therefore launches the program New Shift

KARVINÁ (29 October 2014) – The coal mining company OKD in co-operation with OKD Foundation launch a program called New Shift. Its goal is to support the employees leaving the company in their search for a new job or towards starting their own business.OKD recognizes the uneasy situation of these workers and as responsible company, OKD wants to support them in finding a new career.

Program New Shift is targeting employees leaving OKD who are actively interested in their own future and want to continue to provide for themselves and their families. „Unfortunately due to falling coal prices and expected lower production, a number of skilled and hardworking employees can no longer continue to work for OKD. Now we want to give them a helping hand and provide information and basis, so that they can decide about their own future,” says the Managing Director of OKD Dale Ekmark.

„OKD wants to keep acting responsibly and within the framework of New Shift also show that miners can do more than mine coal,” adds program manager Lucie Vávrová. According to her the program has two main pillars – Find a new job with the Foundation (S nadací za prací) and Support of entrepreneurs (Podpora podnikání).

The main intention of the pillar Find a new job with the Foundation is to offer help with the search for a new job. Through a series of trainings, drafting of CVs, trial job interviews, re-qualifications and social and psychological counseling, the professionals from OKD Foundation will assist the employees in identifying and finding new opportunities. „In co-operation with the Czech Labor Office and Czech Confederation of Industry we will also monitor the needs of other companies in the region and try to connect the offer and demand side of the labour market,” says the manager of the program Find a new job with the Foundation Michaela Kühtreiberová. And adds that the whole team puts a great effort into getting in touch with other employers in the region that are looking for reliable, skilled and trained employees.

The second pillar focuses on support of entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized businesses. It wants to help the former employees to realize their ideas and successfully launch a stand-alone trade or a start-up business. The new entrepreneurs will be advised on how to deal with legal, financial and administrative burden that may have otherwise discouraged them from entrepreneurship.

The situation of employees leaving OKD will be resolved in close co-operation with the Trade Unions, Czech Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Czech Labour Office, CzechInvest and trade associations, such as Czech Confederation of Industry. „Czech Labour Office closely cooperates with OKD through its Ostrava Regional branch. We are looking into the structure of the dismissed employees in advance and we are prepared to assist them already during their notice period. We are also selecting the most suitable project, in which the dismissed employees could take part and also offer them individual counseling, most appropriate retraining or potential support in their new jobs,” concludes Yvoan Jungová, director of the Ostrava Regional branch of Czech Labour Office.
