OKD officially presented its intention to continue in its mining activities in Karvina Mine until 2035 to the Environment Ministry
Ostrava (March 23, 2012) – Within the scope of the preliminary procedure, OKD submitted to the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic a notice of intention to continue in the mining activities in the Karviná Mine, the ČSA site, until 2035. The planned production would affect the lives of the population mainly in the locations of Orlová-Výhoda and Staré Město u Karviné.

Any production must be preceded by the preparation of documentation to assess the impact of mining activities on the environment (the EIA procedure) and by a favourable opinion issued by the Ministry of Environment of the CR regarding the intention of the mining activity.
The next step is to solve the conflicts of interests in accordance with § 33 of the Mining Act. In practice this means that OKD must conclude agreements with all homeowners and land owners in the areas affected by mining. Only after this an application for the authorisation of mining activities can be submitted to the relevant Regional Mining Authority.

The discussions between OKD and the city of Karviná about the extension of mining area started in November last year. “ We will negotiate with all stakeholders absolutely openly and transparently within the scope of all the possibilities specified in the mining legislation. Inhabitants of Staré Město u Karviné and Výhoda will be offered buyouts of their property and land, an option to build a new house or flat or continuous recovery from the impact of mining,“ says Radim Tabášek, OKD Chief Mining District Development Officer.

Already last year, OKD took part in public meeting with inhabitants of of the village of Orlová-Výhoda, and it plans to meet the inhabitants of Staré Město, where the representatives of the company present their plans, planned actions and alternatives of further development in connection with the company´s intention to expand the production.

Any information relating to the intention to extend the production under the Staré Město near Karviná and Orlová-Výhoda are also available at the newly established website www.karvina-staremesto.cz and www.orlova-vyhoda.cz.
