OKD sent EIA documentation to the Ministry of Environment regarding mining extension of Karviná Mine. The success of the project has a key importance for the company.

Karviná (20th August 2014) – OKD sent EIA documentation to the Ministry of Environment regarding the environmental impact assessment for its intention to extend mining at Karviná Mine, site ČSA. Miners put key importance to this development project to preserve employment at Karviná district and secure future life of the company. Now, public will have a chance to participate in the process and submit their comments to the submitted documentation.

That being supposed, mining at Karviná Mine in new areas should begin in 2016 at the earliest. At present, in comparison with the original (maximal) intention submitted in March 2012, OKD has submitted the Ministry of Environment a decreased scenario of mining extension. The company was considering several options of mining extension and after evaluating all economic, ecological and social aspects and after the decision with the city of Karviná, it decided to select the one that will not endanger the industrial zone Karviná-Nové Pole, neither the area of Karviná ponds included in the system NATURA 2000. As a part of its new intention, the company introduced the option that would have also lower impacts on the inhabited areas.“ With the exception of Karviná – Staré Město, our mining intentions shall not preclude the community development projects. Similarly the impact on the bottomland forest in river basin of Olše river should be reduced,” says COO of OKD, Pavel Hadrava.

„Documentation must have addressed hundreds of comments by state institutions and local municipalities, civic organizations and by individuals, which are, together with other legislative appendages, a necessary condition for a possible commencement of mining. Proposed solutions were prepared for relevant comments. We put a great importance to the project, because its success is a necessary prerequisite for continuation of mining at Karviná Mine. Only then, we will be able to provide work for thousands of people underground, out of which, most live in Karviná district. The project gives us a possibility to extend life of hard coal mining in our region and employ a great number of people in the future in the region, the region already relatively impacted by high structural unemployment for a long time. Even at times which are extremely challenging globally,” Hadrava adds.

According to valid legislation, anyone will now have 30 days to comment on the documentation that will be placed on public notice boards and internet web site www.cenia.cz and send their observations. These will be dealt with within the appraisal process that will be prepared by an expert assigned by the Ministry of Environment of the CR, and then the public hearing will follow as well as the statement by the Ministry.
