OKD Won Award for the Presentation of its Beneficial Activities

PRAGUE / OSTRAVA (June 10, 2009) – The OKD mining company scored in the fourth year of the Czech Award for Public Relations competition where it won the first prize in one of the main categories (Corporate Responsibility and Philanthropy). The company won the award for the manner how, in the past year, it presented its endowment, reclamation and other activities beneficial to the general public. On Tuesday night, the award was jointly received in the Prague Marriott Hotel by Petra Mašínová, the OKD Chief Public Relations & Communication Officer, and Vladimír Bystrov of the Bison Rose agency, with which the company collaborated in the preparation of the communication strategy.

“We are proud of the PR Award, but the ever-growing emphasis of OKD on a responsible behaviour towards the environment is the basis of all. If the company did not behave in this way, we could never win this award. It is a reward for everyone who last year participated in the preparation and functioning of our corporate foundation, in landscape revitalisation, sponsorship activities, as well as in new projects developed for the OKD staff,“ Mašínová commented on the triumph. OKD achieved success in one of the most popular categories, where 19 projects from the entire Czech Republic were entered.

Last year OKD significantly changed its face. In addition to sponsoring culture and sports, it established the OKD Foundation that distributed over CZK 62 million among 403 projects in support of the health and social spheres, education, leisure activities, activities of ethnic minorities or restoration of parks and school playgrounds. The company also started to inform the public more about its activities by means of dozens of press releases and campaigns, in which e.g. prominent personalities of the region praised the contribution of the mining company to the development of science, sports, culture or environment. At the same time, the members of the jury recognised the increased amount of positive news in the media, a changed attitude of the public to the company’s activities and the presentation of the mining profession as a promising field using the state-of-the-art scientific and technical knowledge.

The winners of the main categories are automatically nominated to the European-wide competition Golden Drum PR. Its results will be announced in autumn in Portorož, Slovenia, and OKD may be one of the front-runners as well.
