Paskov Mine has won the Golden Gnome for work safety

OSTRAVA (11th May 2008) – Staříč Site, Paskov Mine owned by OKD has won with extraordinary safety results the 2007 Zlatý Permon Competition (Golden Gnome Competition) evaluating safety results in mining companies. It won the award over 11 mining companies in its class. The Gnome statue which should, according to the legend, bring help and good luck was handed to the mine management on Friday by Ivo Pěgřímek, Chairman of the Czech Mining Authority.

“This mine has always had a great system of work safety so for sure it was no random win,” said Mr. Pěgřímek, who worked himself at Paskov Mine in the past, when handing over the award. “Seams are lower here than in the Karviná area of OKD and thus conditions for coal mining are more difficult,” added the recently appointed boss of the Mining Authority.

According to the statement of Jiří Hůla, Mine Manager at Staříč Site, this award represents an interesting motivation for all miners for future. “It is acknowledgement to all employees. Nice but binding,” said Mr. Hůla when receiving the statue.

Last year, the number of registered accidents went down by 16 percent to 101 and the number of accidents requiring a hospital stay of more than five days went down even by 71 percent to 6 accidents. The mine employing more than 3,400 people including contractors has not reported any extraordinary events or fatal accidents last year.

Employee safety ranks first for OKD management. Working conditions should be significantly improved even by machinery and equipment of world-class parameters worth more than CZK eight billion that the company has been installing underground within POP 2010 project as well as by new working equipment such as boots and lamps.

OKD employs more than 15,000 people and further almost 1,500 employees in its subsidiaries. Coal production in OKD is also provided by approximately 3,500 contractors. Hard coal is mined at Karviná Mine at their sites Lazy and ČSA on the borders between Karviná and Orlová as well as at ČSM Mine and Darkov Mine in Karviná District and at Paskov Mine in Frýdek-Místek District. The average salary in OKD in 2007 equaled CZK 29,135.

OKD is held by the Dutch company New World Resources B. V.
