People provided CZK 40,000 to St. Barbora, OKD Foundation even doubled the amount

31st August 2008, Ostrava – A record-breaking distance of 409 kilometers – that is exactly the number of kilometers the visitors of OKD Mining Festival rode on the exercise bikes on Saturday. OKD Foundation promised to transfer one hundred Czech crowns per each kilometer to the bank account of the St. Barbora Civic Association (SBCA). And, as the result exceeded any record achieved so far, the Foundation decided to double the funds to CZK 80,000.

“People were riding the bikes with great enthusiasm and efforts. They even tore down the gear at one of the exercise bikes and the last cyclists had to use the lightest transmission only,” specified the race atmosphere Tomáš Belka, member of the St. Barbora Civic Association Board. Despite that, the 2006 record was beaten by two kilometers.

The St. Barbora Civic Association takes care of children whose father died due to a job-related accident. The proceeds from this race will help the families to cover schooling expenses – the association will pay out CZK 2,000 to each child to purchase school aids.
