Profit of OKD for 2006 close to 5 billion Czech crowns

Ostrava, July 26 – The company OKD, a. s. (hereinafter referred to as OKD), for 2006, attained the profit (pursuant to Czech accounting regulations) of 4.752 billion Czech crowns before tax. After taxes the profit of the company was 3.571 billion Czech crowns. "In 2006 the market prices of coal and coke decreased as compared to the previous year, which had an impact on the profit," assessed the economic manager of OKD, Petr Mokroš.

The output exploitation of coal in the district in 2006 exceeded 13 million tons. This was an increase of nearly 252 thousand tons in comparison to 2005. In total, 13.5 million tons of black coal was sold, which is 736 thousand tons more than in 2005. The volume of coke sold increased as well; in the last year it reached 1.3 million tons, which is 160 thousand tons more than in 2005.

The overall revenues of the company in 2006 exceeded 39 billion Czech crowns, which is 3.9 billion less than in the previous year. The decrease of the revenues from sale of goods and products was affected in particular by the adverse trend of market prices of coal and coke in 2006.

The costs of the company in 2006 reached the amount of 35.5 billion Czech crowns. “Their increase by 268.3 million crowns was influenced primarily by depreciation of the difference in valuation of OKD equity at the amount of 767.5 million crowns and by increased costs for transport of coal and coke following the take-over of the Fuel Division from the Metalimex company in June 2006," Petr Mokroš commented the results.

The investments of OKD in 2006 exceeded 2 billion Czech crowns. From a large part they involved purchase of mining machinery and equipment and innovation thereof. To a significant extent the company invested in mine openings related to making accessible the coal stock at the mines of Darkov, ČSA, Paskov and ČSM. “This year we continued our investments into cooling equipment, which helped to improve microclimatic conditions at mine workstations," explained the technical manager of OKD, Jan Matula. He added that in 2006 investments were realized on the surface as well, for example into modernization of the heating plant at the ČSM mine and into reconstruction and modernization of the dressing plants at the Darkov and Lazy mines.

The average count of own employees in OKD in 2006 was 17,334 persons, which is 943 less than in 2005. In comparison to 2005 the productivity of labour from ROTP (district output exploitation) per one worker increased by 3.2 %. The average monthly salary in 2006 reached the amount of 27,316 CZK, which was by 8,2 % more than in 2005.

The OKD joint-stock company ( is an important domestic producer of black coal. It is a part of the RPG group, which is the largest private employer in the Czech Republic.
