Summer with OKD: Miners and Their Foundation Invite Residents and Visitors of Northern Moravia to Special Cultural Events
OSTRAVA (July 10, 2012) – In recent years, OKD has been steadily increasing its support to the region in which it operates. Traditionally, the mining company is the main partner of the festivals “Colours of Ostrava“ and the “Summer Shakespeare Festival“ in Ostrava; moreover, this year it will support organizers of many other events for residents and visitors to Northern Moravia and Silesia.

“OKD is no longer a large state-owned company which used to hold one annual mining festival where, at the times of socialism, goods in scarce supply could be purchased and where loyalty bonuses were distributed to the miners. We try to think of our employees and other residents of the region throughout the year. Therefore, we have supported summer events that offer quality entertainment and, in many cases, they also serve noble goals,“ explained OKD Chief Public Relations and Communication Officer, Petra Mašínová.

For example, the historic premiere of the Summer Shakespeare Festival in Karviná will be one of such special events. Thanks to the collaboration with OKD, the theatre festival organizers will stage the comedy “Love's Labour's Lost“ in the local amphitheatre for almost two thousand spectators. A counterculture event, Deep Camp Hlubina, in the post-industrial site of the Lower Vítkovice Area that was awarded an OKD Foundation grant is another novelty. This year, the mining company will also support the traditional folk festival the “Bruntal Indian Summer“ through its foundation.

This year, the OKD foundation has launched a new project, “Experience without barriers,“ to provide easier access to the four music festivals to wheelchair users. “In the Moravian Silesian Region, we will support the organizers of the festivals “Colours of Ostrava“ and “Štěrkovna Open Music“ who will build stands for the disabled in their compounds for example. We also prepare a sale of products of local sheltered workshops. A brand new addition to the festival will be “bezBAR“ i.e. the festival bar, where visitors will be served by people in wheelchairs,“ explained the Director of the OKD Foundation, Jiří Suchánek.
